With the Romans at bay and
following a policy of non-
intervention, Jewish life
thrived. Jerusalem became a
center of learning, not only for
local Hebrew and Aramaic-
speaking Jews, but also for
Hellenized Jews from abroad.
Many of the great rabbis of the
Talmud resided in the city.
Jewish political and religious
matters were determined by a
Jerusalem-based body called
the Sanhedrin.
